Inserting myself in spaces where I can create access to resources or serve as a source for inspiration is one of the greatest pleasures of life. Volunteering is an act of selfless service, with the impact of your efforts worth its weight in gold, positively influencing communities and people to feel more optimistic about the future.
Traveling with Motherland Connect, a non-profit organization specializing in highlighting the beauty of Africa by planning cultural immersion and volunteer experiences, I was able to combine my passion for travel and giving back in meaningful ways.
As I reflect on the last day of Women’s History Month it has become increasingly clear that prioritizing your health and wellness should always be a priority. Carrying the weight of the world is a heavy load and creating space for rest, without guilt, should be normalized. Yes, we are strong and full of wonder, but these knots in my shoulders from stress are a telling sign that something has to give. What is the point of overextending yourself to a cause, a person, or profession, if it’s to your detriment? How can you truly make a lasting impact if you’re always overwhelmed or under the weather?

It’s been a few weeks since my life-changing travels to Africa and I’m still processing my experience. When I allow myself the space to reflect; I am overcome with emotion. A whole new world opened up to me and I am simply overwhelmed with pride and a deep desire to discover more about my family history.
As a descendant of enslaved Africans, connecting with my roots has always been one of my heart’s desires. Through the resilience of my ancestors stolen from Africa more than 400 years ago during the trans-Atlantic slave trade, I have been blessed in this lifetime to return home and pay respect.
